Department of Sociology

Introduction

The Department of Sociology is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement through the study of society, social institutions, and human behavior. The department provides an interdisciplinary learning environment that equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and address contemporary social issues.
It offers two major undergraduate programs with ADP/E: BS Sociology and BS Gender Studies. The BS Sociology program focuses on developing a comprehensive understanding of social structures, cultural dynamics, social change, and research methodologies. Its major objectives include fostering critical thinking, enhancing analytical and research skills, and promoting an understanding of social diversity and development. The program also aims to prepare students for careers in academia, public service, development organizations, and social research institutions. The BS Gender Studies program is designed to examine gender relations, inequalities, and the role of gender in shaping social, political, and economic processes. Its key objectives are to develop gender-sensitive perspectives, promote social justice and equality, and equip students with the tools to analyze gender-related issues in diverse contexts. The department emphasizes experiential learning through research projects, fieldwork, internships, and community-based activities. It encourages students to engage with real-world challenges and contribute to evidence-based solutions. Graduates of the BS Sociology program are expected to demonstrate strong research, communication, and problem-solving abilities for addressing societal concerns. Graduates of the BS Gender Studies program are expected to possess the knowledge and skills necessary to advocate for gender equity and inclusive development. Both programs aim to produce socially responsible, ethical, and professionally competent graduates. The department also promotes intellectual curiosity, lifelong learning, and active citizenship among its students. The overall outcome of these programs is the development of graduates who can contribute effectively to social development, policy formulation, research, and community empowerment at local, national, and global levels.

Vision

The BS Sociology program aspires to be a premier centre of sociological education and research, recognized for its commitment to understanding social dynamics, inequality, and cultural transformation at local and global levels. It aims to foster graduates with a well developed sociological imagination and analytical insight to envision equitable, just, and sustainable societies. Through critical engagement with themes such as class, gender, diversity, deviance, and institutional change, the program seeks to train future leaders and thinkers capable of shaping inclusive social policy, community development, and scholarly discourse.

Mission

To fulfil this vision, the program delivers a rigorous and interdisciplinary curriculum encompassing classical and contemporary sociological theories, research methods, and elective courses (e.g., criminology, demography, urban sociology). It emphasizes experiential learning through community internships, fieldwork, data analysis, and student led research projects that address real world social issues. The department actively fosters partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organizations to translate academic insights into policy briefs, social programs, and public outreach. Additionally, by hosting seminars, workshops, and dialogues, and by supporting faculty and student scholarship, the program cultivates critical thinking, civic engagement, and professional skills to empower graduates as socially responsible agents of change who can meaningfully contribute to sustainable societal transformation.
